Somasila–Srisailam Helicopter Circuit: Where the Pilgrimage Begins Before the Temples

Pilgrimages usually begin on highways. This one begins beside a helicopter.

The morning starts quietly at the helipad on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Bags are weighed one last time. Ground staff move passengers into small groups because every kilogram matters before take-off. Somebody checks the weather on their phone. Another traveller wonders aloud whether the forests will be visible from the air. The change is surprisingly quick.

The city's broad roads and apartment blocks soon give way to dry farmland broken by rocky hills, reservoirs and scattered villages. The Deccan Plateau stretches out in muted shades of brown and green before the Krishna River begins appearing in long, winding sections below. It is an unusual way to approach a temple town. The distance between places feels shorter, yet the landscape still tells the story of the journey.

Somasila rarely feels crowded, even during the pilgrimage season.

Most visitors head first towards the Lalita Someswara Swamy Temple, where flower sellers arrange jasmine garlands beside small brass lamps and coconuts. Priests move between shrines without hurry. Families wait patiently beneath the stone corridors until their turn arrives. Nobody seems eager to leave immediately after darshan. Many drift towards the river instead, sitting beneath trees or watching fishing boats move slowly across the reservoir.

The backwaters change the mood of the place.

Children throw pebbles into the water while older visitors remain quietly on the steps leading towards the river. By late afternoon, the breeze carries the smell of wet earth and damp stone across the banks. The helicopter may have shortened the journey, but time still feels slower here.
